England secured a hard-fought victory over Iceland, though it was far from straightforward as the visitors came alive after the break. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton proved pivotal with a series of crucial saves to preserve the win, while elsewhere World Cup holders Spain cruised to a 5-0 victory over Ukraine. The Lionesses will now face both Spain and Ukraine in June, with the group winner earning automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
Sarina Wiegman welcomed captain Leah Williamson back into the starting line-up following a hamstring injury, and England began brightly, dominating possession without creating clear chances. Iceland largely remained pinned in their own defensive third, but England eventually made the breakthrough in the 21st minute. After regaining possession deep in their own half, Lauren Hemp drove forward before slipping the ball to Alessia Russo, who showed excellent skill to turn and fire into the far corner for her 30th international goal.
The second half told a different story as Iceland applied sustained pressure and forced England onto the back foot. Williamson was withdrawn at the interval, and the visitors threatened from a series of set-pieces and long throws, testing Hampton repeatedly. The Chelsea goalkeeper stood firm, producing a string of impressive stops, including a vital late save from Dilja Zomers after a rebound fell kindly inside the box. Iceland pushed until the final moments, but England held on, surviving a let scare in stoppage time to secure all three points.
